Installing a Portable Generator – Setting Up the Gas Cap
It is a good idea to invest in portable generator oil. Just so you know what I am talking about. It’s really quite simple actually. You might be asking what kind of gas you need to use for portable generators anyway? That is an easy one, LPG or gasoline.
If you are going to use gasoline, then there is no doubt you will want a portable generator fuel that is fueled with regular fuel. But if you plan on using LPG as your fuel, then you would of course need a special fuel to power it. What is the best source of portable generator fuel? Simply put – diesel fuel. Why?
Diesel fuel is cheap to purchase and to run. Another reason is that it is abundant. In fact, you could find diesel in almost every part of the world. If you think about it, you can just go to your nearest gas station and get a full tank of gas at very little cost. You might even get more, especially if you’re using LPG as your portable generator fuel.
Now, what if you intend to use LPG as your generator’s fuel? Well, you will have to purchase an LPG tank. It is advisable to buy a tank that is a bit bigger than your portable generator (gas cylinder). You see – the larger the tank the more gas you’ll be able to put into your generator – enough to power all of your appliances for several days.
Of course, this won’t work if you don’t install a gas cap for your generator. How do you install a gas cap for your generator then? Well, you’ll just look for a cap that’s suitable for your generator’s size. You don’t want to install a cap that is too big for your generator. This will only make your generator unstable – and that’s not something you want on a day-to-day basis when you’re working on a project.
Now that you know what kind of gas cap you should buy for your portable generator, let’s discuss installing it. Start off by unscrewing the bolts and removing the cap from the gas cylinder. Place the cap in the middle of the generator. Make sure that the gas cylinder is level and then bolt it to the ground. After this, you can now place the tank on the generator and screw it down. This will ensure that the tank doesn’t leak gas.
Once you’re done with this step, you can now place your portable generator’s gas cap over the generator. Then, you can start feeding the gas into the gas cylinder. Just continue feeding it until you hear a noise coming from the generator – this means that the gas has reached its proper level.
To avoid leaking, always keep an eye out for leaks. If you see any, you need to feed the gas slowly and then set it to its normal level. In case the gas doesn’t reach the proper level and blows up, you need to open the tank valve. You can do this by either unscrewing the gas cap or just lifting it up. If you’re careful enough, you won’t have to deal with a blown gasoline from your portable generator ever again.
Now that you have finished feeding gas into your generator, you should next check the remaining gas in the tank. Make sure that the cap is still there. If the cap is already removed, then you need to put it back. You can try to blow into the gas cylinder to ensure that all the gas escapes. However, if there are leaks in your generator, you can always buy one of those portable gas testers and check if the gas escapes as well.
Finally, you need to shut down your portable generators. You can either turn it off completely or just stop the supply of gas to ensure that the gas cap is securely in place. Always remember to follow safety procedures when you’re working with gas and other materials that are flammable.
It’s very important to know how a generator works, especially if you plan to fix one on your own. Always remember to follow instructions to the letter to ensure that your generator is working properly. In addition, make sure that you do not overload your generator. If you do overload it, you might find that the generator suddenly gives out.
